It is now or never for the oldest society in the world, according to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who promised to take immediate action to address the nation’s decreasing birthrate.
At the start of the current legislative session, Kishida made a policy address in which he stated that our nation is on the verge of whether it can continue its societal functions.
When it comes to regulations involving births and child-rearing, it is now or never – it is a subject that just cannot wait any longer, he continued.
By June, according to Kishida, he will propose proposals to quadruple the funding allocated to child-related policies, and in April, a new government agency would be established to address the issue.
According to the most recent data available, Japan experienced a record low number of births in 2021, leading to the country’s largest-ever natural population drop.
